DESERT ROAD EMERGENCY PHONES UNLIKELY

An article published in the Bulletin in September stated that the installation of telephones along SH1, the Desert Road, was under consideration by the Wanganui Automobile Association. More information has come to hand concerning the recent feasibility study conducted by the Wanganui division of the Ministry of Works. Their report stated that thev had made a prcliminary investigation into the matter and came up with the recommendation "that it is unlikely phones could be installed at minimal cost. with the main concerns being the high capital costs and the possibilitv of vandalism." Radio telephones were also taken into consideration. but again cost was the barrier. with installation set at $3000 per phone. Kevin Allum from the Wanganui AA said he would be happy to raise the matter at their next month's council meeting. The Desert Road is in desperate need of some form of breakdown serviee because of its isolation. " We realise there is a great cost involved and that there is likely to be a high maintenance cost." he said. "The prospect of installing telephones is unlikely, but I don't want to jump the gun." The matter is due to be raised again at another meeting in two week's time.
