KOKIRI SCHEME FOR UNEMPLOYED

Maungarongo Marae has joined the ranks of the innovative with their latest effort to assist the unemployed of the Waimarino. A Labour Department work training scheme has been undertaken by the marae and caters for the Waimarino/ Taihape area. The scheme operates under the name of Kokiri training assistance programme (T.A.P.S.). This kokiri administrates all kokiri in this region and also the Kohanga Reo, the children's learning programme. Kokiri has affiliated organisations that work in areas of social concern: courts; penal centres; recreational activities; maori cultural and spiritual matters; maori health; education; whare whananga; employment resource centres. It also works closelv with the unemployed. Employment is the first priority of kokiri and the T.A.P.S. scheme enables unemployed people to learn valuable skills that may assist them in finding a job. Employment opportunities in the area are not great for unskilled workers, with limited work from time to time in market gardens.

forestry, railways, farms and as shop assistants. Motel and restaurant work tends to be seasonal as is some other employment. People from outside of the district often take these jobs as they come in search of seasonal employment associated with their recreational interests. There are two courses being run currently at the marae, those being weaving and administration, with three 'trainees' on each course. Further training modules are being developed in music and drama, catering and a host of other valuable skills. The scheme needs people with specialised skills to operate the courses. The organisers would be interested to hear from individuals who may be willing to teach the trainees. An allowance in the Kokiri scheme will enable tutors to receive payment for their time in what is a very worthwhile cause. Those interested may con-

tact either Ritchie or Mathew Mareikura at the Maungarongo Marae. The courses do not offer

diplomas or degrees of any form to trainees but instead provide an invaluable grounding of work-related skills.
