Ohakune 75th Jubilee booklet launched

About 50 people attended the launching of the Ohakune 75th Jubilee booklet at the Ohakune Hotel last Monday evening. The 52-page booklet reviews much of the history of the township since it was proclaimed a borough on 2 December 1911. Major developments such as milling, market gardening, the building of the North Island Main Trunk Railway Line, the construction of the Ohakune Mountain Road, the influence of Tongariro National Park and the impact of the Turoa Skifield on the town are all covered in this handsomely produced and well-ill-ustrated booklet. There are no fewer than 24 photographs and three maps.

The booklet also includes the programme of events for the Jubilee celebrations in February. At the launching Mayor Bill Taylor corhplimented those involved in the production of the booklet and spoke of the 'snowball effect' that seemed to be so much a feature of the Ohakune community. "As usual the whole idea started with a small committee of people and ended up with a large number of others who voluntarily gave of their time and effort to ensure the project would succeed," Those involved in the production of the booklet — either by contributing their time and skills or providing information and photographs — included: Mary

Anne Gill, Dennis Beytagh, Merrilyn George, Vera Donnelly, Catherine Dodd, Brian Allerby. Rod Gill, Erin Marnoch, Robert Milne. Dellyn Barrett, John Gould, Rosalind Donald. Emily Thompson, Bruce and Lesley Thompson. Mathew Mareikura, Tony Wright. John Lythgoe. Ohakune Borough Council staff and Catherine Steele of Marton. The booklet is on sale for $3 at the Ruapehu Region Information Office. Kapai Bookshop and the Ohakune Council chambers. Only 2.000 copies were printed so make sure you get yourcopv. It would makean ideal Christmas present to send to ex-patriate Ohakuneites.
