Pig-hunt gaining popularity
Over 80 pig-hunting enthusiasts shouldered rifles and took to the bush over Labour weekend for the annual Waimarino pig-hunting contest. Groups of three hunters worked to hunt. down pri/ewinning boars and sows. with pri/e monc\ totalling S 1 200. Treasurer of the Waimarino pig hunter's club. Christinc Herewini. eommented that a tremendous amount of interest is generatcd every ycar throughout the distriet because of the pig hunt and. as a result. the membership numbers have swelled. The contest began on midnight Fridav and finished at Ipm on Mondav when winners were decidcd at a weigh-in at the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi. The biggest boar was shot by Raetihi local Duncan Metekingi who is an enthusiastic hunter. His winning boar weighed in at 73.5kg while the biggest sow. weighing 41 ,5kg. was shot by Bob Pittway of Raetihi. The biggest tusk, to establish the biggest jaw amongst the entries was won by Baldy Haitana. also of Raetihi. RESULTS: Biggest boar: D. Metekingi, 73.5kg. 1 (S500), Terry Baxter 70.5kg, 2 ($200). Kevin Martin 69.25kg, 3 ($100). Biggest sow: B. Pittway
