Cycle classic through Waimarino tomorrow
The Waimarino will see a 50-strong group of top cyclists come through the townships of Raetihi, Ohakune and National Park tomorrow. The field of 50 riders — 25 from overseas together with the best from New Zealand — are competing in the 1 986 Raleigh Classic from Wellington to Auckland ... New Zealand 's premier cycle tour. The race started in Wellington on Sunday and is due to finish in Auckland on Saturday. The tota! race distance is 1 144km. We will see them on the 150km (93 mile)
Stage 6 between Wanganui and the Chateau Tongariro at Whakapapa. The riders are due to leave Wanganui at 10.30am and arrive at the Chateau at about 2.30pm, passing through Raetihi at approximately 12.50pm and Ohakune at 1 .05. At both these towns a 'town sprint' will be fea-
tured. Raetihi will feature the 'Skiers InnTown Sprint' at 12.54pm and Ohakune will stage the 'Ohakune Sports and Cycles Town Sprint' at 1 ,08pm. These cyclists who include riders from Czechoslovakia. Holland. Swit/erland, Great Britain, Japan and Australia then head north for National Park pausing only at the Maka-
tote Viaduct for the Munction Ski Shop Hill Climb'at about 1.30pm. The main sponsor for the 1986 Raleigh Classic is the Jackel Corporation of Auckland, importers and distributors of the Raleigh bicycles. As a matter of local interest, one of Jackel's directors is Mr Wayne Karsten, who has a holiday home in Ohakune.
