Raetihi Council elects new committees

Re-elected Mayor of Raetihi Garrick Workman welcomed new councillors and re-elected councillors at the first Borough meeting of the new council. Mayor Workman congratulated Crs John Compton, Tom Punch, Keith Haitana, Ken Summerhays on regaining their positions and welcomed new-comers to the council Leigh Ryland and Barbara Dobson. He extended thanks to Hope Vaughan for her efficiency as Town Clerk and her recent duty as returning officer. The Mayor's "sparring partner" Cr John Compton whocontested the Mayoralty, was elected deputy-Mayor in a vote by councillors. The following committees were appointed: Town Planning: Crs Punch (chair), Webb, Ryland and Haitana. Works and Reserves: Crs

Summerhays (chair), Webb, Compton and Haitana. Finance and Administration: Crs Compton (chair). Dobson, Summerhays and Punch. Mr Workman proposed that Crs Ryland and Dobson be floating members to the extent that they would be able to attend other committee meetings to give the new councillors a chance to become familiar with council proceedings and requirements. He also suggested that councillors address each other on a first name basis. "1 feel that we should get on with the job and dispense with formalities but still in a business-like manner, " he said, and continued on to say "I have no desire to be addressed as'Your Worship' all the time." The matter was discussed at length with the general concensus being that familiarity

would lead to contempt if there was less formality. "We should maintain the warmth of joviality but at the same time keep a degree of courtesy," said Cr Compton. It was decided that the council maintain the status quo and carry on the tradition of using formal titles..
