WAIKUNE FOR SALE
A well-known landmark in the Waimarino h soon to have a new owner and a new image ... the Waikune Prisoncomplex is up for sale. The former 'owners' — the Justice Department — has advised the Lands and Survey Department to sell the prison site, the buildings and the forestry block across SH4 (a total of some 850 hectares), on the open market for the best price it can get. It is expected that the former minimum security prison consisting of 20 staff houses, in-mate's accommodation, shower and toilet blocks will be vacated by the end of this month. * The Ministry of Works and Development has started an investigation to ascertain whether any of the land is required by its original owners or their descendants (if they can be traced), but it was hoped that the former prison complex could be sold as one single entity. Organisations which have so far shown an interest include: The Outdoor Pursuits Centre; Ruapehu Alpine Lifts; the Tourist Hotel Corporation.
