Ohakune District Court

The following cases were heard by District Judge E. W. Unwin in the Ohakune District Court last Thursday. Sergeant Neil Coker of Ohakune appeared for the Police and Traffic Officer Ian Harrison appeared for the Ministry of Transport. ★ ★ ★ Gregory Marshall Bates, 19, engineering cadet of Auckland, did not appear but pleaded guilty through his counsel to a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol in Clyde Street, Ohakune, on 23 August, and asked that the case be transferred to Auckland for sentencing. Accordingly defendant was remanded to appear in the Auckland District Court ori 1 1 November for sentence. Counsel - D. G. Harvey ★ ★ ★ Denis Mason Peihopa Bishop, unemployed garden worker of Ohakune who appeared for sentencing on a charge of robbery to which he had pleaded guilty at last month's sitting, faced a new charge of breaking a bottle in a public place on 17 October. He was further remanded for a probation officer's report and sentenced to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 20 November. Current bail to continue. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Tamahana Bishop, 29, millhand of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, on 19 July. He was convicted and fined $265, court costs $38.50, and diisqualified from driving for six months. * * * Renee Marcelle Bloxham, 23, solo parent of Raetihi, appeared for sentencing on two charges relating to possession and cultivation of cannabis to which she had pleaded guilty at last month's hearing. Court heard from counsel how defendant neither uses nor approves of the use of cannabis and that the cannabis material found at her address belonged to other persons. Judge Unwin agreed that defendant had been "duped". He said that defendant appeared to be a wellmotivated young lady and he intended giving her the benefit of the doubt. She was sentenced to six months community care with the Waimarino Resource Centre. Counsel - D. G. Harvey

Trevor John Bolstad, 26, machine operator of Kaikoura, did not appear but pleaded guilty through counsel to a charge of fraudulently converting a sum of $780 to his own use on or about 29 April and fo a charge of either stealing or receiving a stereo cassette player valued at $55 on or about 20 September. Defendant explained through counsel that he now lived and worked in a very remote area of the Kaikouras and requested that proceedings be transferred to the Kaikoura District Court. Accordingly. there being no objection from the police, the defendant was remanded to the Kaikoura District Court on a date to be fixe for sentencing. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Michael Daniel Boon, 19, farmhand of Bombay, Auckland, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving in and around Ohakune on 13 October. Court heard how defendant had driven his unsafe white Mini around several streets in Ohakune on that date but he denied doing two 360 degree spins in the Ohakune Junction area. Judge Unwin described it as a typical case of a young driver showing off. He was convicted and fined $300, court costs $38.50, and he was disqualified from driving for six months. ★ ★ ★ Dennis Leslie Brown, 50, forest ranger of Ohakune, pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol in Goldfinch Street, Ohakune, on 20 July. He was remanded on bail of $200 to appear in the

Ohakune District Court on 11 December for a defended hearing. Counsel - P. Brown ★ ★ ★ Derek Iria Chase, 23, labourer of Taihape, appeared for sentencing on charges of driving while disqualified and driving with excess breath alcohol to which he had pleaded guilty at last month's hearing. He had been remanded for a drug and alcohol assessment report. He was sentenced to five months non-residential periodic detention and disqualified from driving for two years. He was also placed under supervision for 12 months to allow him to undertake drug and alcohol treatment as directed. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Bruce Alan Craighead, 25, unemployed of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to orie charge of driving with excess breath alcohol in Rangitikei Street, Palmerston North on 24 December 1985, and to one charge of exceeding 50 km/h in a restricted area on the same date. He was sentenced to three months non-residential periodic detention as directed by a warden and disqualified from driving for seven months. On the speedrelated charge he was convicted and fined $50 with court costs of $38.50. ★ ★ ★ Bruce Elliot, 55, sheep farmer of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle on SH1 north of Hatepe on 27 April this year. Court heard how a collision had occurred after defendant's car, travelling uphill had skidded and

crossed the centre line on a corner in wet and oil slick conditions. He was conyicted and fined $100, court costs $38.50. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ David Allan Gibbs, 19. soldier of Waiouru, pleaded guilty to one charge of dangerous driving in Picton on 19 August, and to one charge of failing to ascertain if injury had occurred when his vehicle struck others causing damage valued at $200. He was convicted and fined $175, court costs $38.50, on the dangerous driving charge and $75, court costs $38.50, on the charge of failing to ascertain injury. He was disqualified from driving for six months. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Anthony Peter Gibson, 18, labourer of Ohakune, was charged with driving while disqualified, careless use of a motor vehicle and driving with excess blood alcohol. All of these offences were alleged to have occurred in Raetihi on 9 September. He was also charged with attempting to steal petrol estimated to be valued at $100 from a vehicle parked behind the Ohakune Hotel on 10 October. He pleaded guilty to the last charge but not guilty to the three driving-related charges. He was remanded on bail of $500 with a surety of a like amount to appear on all matters in the Ohakune District Court on 1 1 December for a defended hearing. ★ ★ ★ Nikau Charles Gupwell, 54, railway worker of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to one

charge of driving with excess breath alcohol in Miro Street, Ohakune, on 19 July and to one charge of operating a motor vehicle without a warrant of fitness on the same date and in the same place. On the excess breath alcohol charge he was convicted and fined $300, court costs $38.50 and disqualified fromdrivingforsix months. On the charge of operating a motor vehicle without a current warrant of fitness he was- ccnvicted and ordered to pay court costs of $38.50. ★ ★ ★ Louis Wilson Haitana, 52, driver of Raetihi, pleaded guilty through counsel to exceeding 50 km/h in Anzac Parade, Wanganui, in August 1985. He was convicted and fined $90, court costs $16.50. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Hamish Philip Henderson, 20, kitchen hand of Raetihi, appeared for sentencing on one charge of theft of $2907 and one charge of using a telephone to summon an ambulance with a fictitious message. He had pleaded guilty to both charges at last month's hearing and was remanded for a probation officers report and sentence. Counsel told Court that his client obviously has an alcohol problem. Defendant was convicted and fined $300, court costs $38.50, on the telephone - related charge. On the charge of theft of mon:y he was placed under supervision for 12 months and ordered to undertake treatment for alcohol abuse if directed. He was also ordered to pay back the balance of the monies still

owing within six months. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Vernon Leslie McLeod, 17, sickness beneficiary of Karioi, pleaded guilty to stealing batteries and biscuits valued at $8.02 from the Ohakune New World supermarket on 20 October. He was remanded to the Waimarino Resource Cen-. tre for a community care report and ordered to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 20 November for sentence. Bail was set at $500. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Peti Kaiora Nukunuku. 35, housewife of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol on SH49 during a random stopping checkpoint exereise by the MoT on the night of 19 - 20 July. She was convicted and ordered to undertake 40 hours of community work and disqualified from driving for six months. Counsel - D. G. Harvey. ★ ★ ★ Angelina Rapana, 30. general hand of Raetihi, appeared on one charge of causing bodily injury by carelessly using a motor vehicle on 7 June and refusing to provide a specimen of blood on the same date when required to do so by a registered medical practitioner. She was remanded at large without plea to 20 November to allow her legal counsel to make further enquiries into the circumstances of the case. Counsel P. Brown. ★ ★ ★ Continued page 13.

Glenn Leslie Russell, 23, bar manager of Ohakune was to have appeared for a defended hearing on a charge of assaulting Christopher Arrell on 28 July but he changed his plea to guilty prior to the commencement of proceedings. ★ ★ ★ Julie Pamela Olive Tamatea. 1 7, solo mother of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to stealing clothing valued at $210 from a property in Raetihi Road on 22 August and again to stealing clothing valued at $80 on 24 August. She was convicted arid remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 20 November for a probation officer's report and sentence. Bail was set at $500. Counsel - D. G.
