comprehensive cnough for all but the specialist. who would know it all anyway. The first chapters place the region in a global and New Zealand-wide perspective and look at the mechanics of volcanoes and how they grow. Then follow detailed accounts of the various volcanoes and their particular landscapes, including inter-
esting material on eruptions in modern times, and those inferred from the geological record. The book is profusely illustrated with many fine colour photographs and a number of diagrams and maps which add to the clarity of the text.
