Tongariro centre seeks funds
The Tongariro Natural History Society is attempting to raise $200,000 to help with the upgrading of the Tongariro National Park visitor centre at Whakapapa Village. Thc upgrading. which includes a new facade. an auditorium. a ski museum. a
high-tech vulcanology display and a multi-screen audio-visual prcscntation. is to be partially completed in time for thc national park ccntenary in 1987. The Tongariro Natural History Society is interested in interpreting the park to the public and is raising
money on behalf of the national park. Total cost of the project will be in the region of $600,000. There is a government subsidy of $75,000 for grants or sponsorship and the society has been granted tax exemptions by the Inland Revenue Department for all grants and centennial sponsorship.
The Tongariro Natural History Society aims to promote a wide understanding of the natural processes, flora and fauna, geology, weather, and the natural and human history of the Tongariro park. Thcy have recently published Volcanoes of thc South Wind. by Karen Williams. which is rcviewed bctow.
