Tourism meeting plans promotion

A Tourism Day is to be held in a major effort to unite the tourism interests of the central North Island. Tourism Day 1986 is being organised by a joint committee of local promotion associations from Taumarunui, Taupo, Turangi, Ohakune-Raetihi and Taihape- Waiouru. Committee co-ordinator. Christine La Varis, describes Tourism Day 1986 as the event of the year for the central North lsland's visitor industrv. "It will draw the region s diverse tourist industrv together to discuss and plan how to compete more effectively with other tourist regions," she said. "The central North Island has been slow to organise itself into a tourist region. and Tourism Day 1986 aims to provide the opportunity and incentive for it to get up and running." A full days activities are planned for Thursday 13 November 1986 at the T.H.C. Tokaanu Hotel. Guests speakers, including Stuart Long on "The Advantages of Regional Tourism", and Grant Stevenson on "Kick Starting a Small Town," will address a maximum of 80 participants. Pre-selected leaders will chair five workshops on: regional tourism policv. administering and funding a tourist region. regional tourism research necds. regional visitor information needs and promoting and marketing a tourist region. The summarised findings and resolutions of each workshop will be presented to a plenary session and panel discussion. There will be ample opportunity for participants to meet socially as well. The five local promotion associations within the region are handling the distribution of the registration forms. Registration costs S30.00 and as the venue restricts numbers, tickets will be sold on a first-ia, firstserved basis. Organisers aim to attract a real cross-scction from the tourist industrv. including accommodation, transport. attractions. retailers, professional guides and other visitor-related services.
