Busy on marae
The Raetihi Marae was busier than usual recently when 62 visitors from Ohakune and Raetihi coverged for a weekend of education. The 42 adults and 20 children taking part in the "Live-in" were taught, or reeducated in the area of Maori protocol and an awareness of Te Maori. The visitors were lectured about such things as their history, genealogy and spirituality. The course was aimed at teaching the people a little about themselves, as well as setting objectives and goals in life.
The whole group travelled to Maungarongo Marae in Ohakune to deliver several carvings made in Wanganui, specifically for the opening of the new Kohanga Reo building, last weekend. A special ceremony was performed to commemorate the event. including a Taiaha performed by both men and women - something unique to this area. This was followed by Mass which included people of all nationalities, then further study into correct protocol for last weekend's ceremony.
