Raetihi downed by Waverley

In a deciding match to determine promotion from Wanganui combined rugby second to first division on Saturday, Waverley beat Raetihi 21-17. In a fast, even game, the lead went to both teams until Waverley finally sealed the match in the last few minutes.

In the first half both teams ran the ball and Waverley backs in particular looked good. Waverley led 15-4 at halftime. . The second half was dominated by Raetihi, particularly the forward pack which played very well. Raetihi fought back to lead 17-15 until the last two minutes

when Waverley centre Roger Byam seized on a loose ball and ran half the length of the field for a winning try. For Raetihi all the forwards played exceptionally well. In the backs Kevin Martin had another good game, as did Gabriel Te Moana and Kevin Phillips. For Waverley John Wolfe

kicked his 100th point of the season. Waverley 21- tries, Ian Symes, Grant Reece, Roger Byam, three conversions and penalty to John Wolfe. Raetihi 17 - tries, Chris Bennett, Rangi Bishop, Caton Te Moana, conversion and penalty by Geof Fahey.
