Management plan for Tongariro forest
The draft management plan for the proposed Tongariro State Forest was discussed at meetings held recently in National Park, Turangi and Taumarunui. The plan covers Tongariro forest areas, and the Raurimu and Taurewa farm settlements. The Conservator of Forests at Palmerston North, Ross Hodder, said the members of the public who came to the meetings were generally in favour of the management plan. The Tongariro State Forest has been approved in principle by the government but is stalled at present by the planned reorganisation of government departments. NZ Forest Service lands will be divided among the new forestry corporation, department of conservation and land development corporation, due to start officially on I April 1987. At the meetings the public were also asked for submissions on the division of the forest land. People at the meetings were eager to see the idea of
a state forest park in the area established. Generally the feeling of the meetings was positive, Mr Hodder said.
