Campervans in park cause concern

The number of campervans in the Tongariro National Park has increased significantly in 1986. Particularly notjceable is the number that venture to the ^kifields. This year. campervans have been seen parked in ski field car parks overnight with little or no regard given to the problem of sewage and hvgiene. Tongariro National Park Ranger. Paul Dale. expressed concern that some campers abuse the system by

camping in restricted areas. "Most of them just come for one night. but if it continues, we are going to have to put signs in the carparks forbidding camping in certain areas. which we don't want to do," he said. Mr Dale said that the problem was two-fold. the other aspect being litter in the park. This vear has seen a noticeable rise in campervans over winter, but over the last two vears an increase in summer holidays makers has also meant problems.
