County wants timber levies
At the Waimarino County Council meeting held recently the subject of timber levies was discussed. The levies were to be applied to native timber logging operations in the county. Cr Malcolm whale moved that the Council formally charge and collect fifths on loads across-the-board, to go towards the upgrading of county road affected by logging. ★ ★ ★ The temporary restriction of Makakahi Road to heavy vehicles was lifted and the road was reopened. ★ ★ ★ Blind spots within the county came under consideration with a request that the county clerk liase with the local traffic officer with
regards to the keeping of records of accidents in the county. * ★ ★ Councillors commented on the long running issue of the prospect of a power scheme on the Manganuiateo River and its affect on the river. It was commented that the Ministry of Internal Affairs should apply for a sanction to stop any proposed schemes regarding the river. Cr Malcolm Whale stated that the river should not be interfered with or commercialised in any way. He was backed by Cr John Martin who commented on the possibility of a conservation order from the Ministry to ensure it stays in its natural state.
