Jubilee planning advanced

Plans for the celebration of the 75th jubilee of the Ohakune Borough are well under way. A very successful meeting of the jubilee committee was held last week at which the programme was virtually finalised for activities in February 1987. The jubilee booklet, which is to be launched in early November, is coming along very well, according to Mayor Bill Taylor, "It is a very professional production designed by Dennis Beytagh and written by Mary Anne Gill, which I am sure people will be delighted to have," he said. The selling of advertising for the booklet has been very successful and most of the costs will be covered. The Ohakune business community has offered tremendous support for the booklet. The booklet is to be , launched at a wine and cheese evening at 5.30pm on Monday 3 November at the Ohakune Hotel. The charge for the evening will include a copy of the booklet. The detailed programme for the jubilee week in February will also be announced during the evening. Confirmed events include the visit of the GovernorGeneral who will be welcomed onto the Maungarongo Marae on Sunday 15 February followed by a combined church service. He will visit Ohakune schools the following day. The New Zealand Navy band will be attending the jubilee and there will be a grand float parade later in the week. A presentation will also be made to the lucky baby born closest to the anniversary date of the founding of the Ohakune Borough which took place on 1 November 1911. Ohakune author Merrilyn George hopes that her book on the pre-European and European history of Ohakune and the surrounding district will be available by the time of the jubilee celebrations. All in all the 75th jubilee of the Ohakune Borough should be one to remember, particularly as it will probably be the last. The borough of Ohakune will disappear when Waimarino local authorities eventually amalgamate to form a new Waimarino district council.
