Marcus Hubrich takes Turoa races

New Zealand men's champion Marcus Hubrich of Turoa Alpine Ski Club continued his winning form by taking out first place in the Rossignol giant slalom and Homestyle slalom men's

events at Turoa over the weekend. Conditions for Saturday's Homestyle slalom were perfect with fine, cairn weather and a hard snowpack providing optimum conditions for the field of 62 racers.

Hubrich's win in the men's event was closely contested by his brother Matthias, who skied into second place only tenths of a second behind. Brendon Boon of Stratford Mountain Club picked up third place. In the womens event Tanya Casey of Whakapapa Ski Club convincingly beat runner-up Kate Reaney of the Havelock Ski Club, with Shereen Mosaed of Turoa Alpine Ski Club in third place. In Sunday's Rossignol giant slalom Hubrich was again on top. Simon Wi Rutene of Ruapehu Ski Club, fresh from a series of wins on the South Island ski race circuit, put pressure on Hubrich in the first run and was leading by half a second. H owever, he caught a gate in the second run and did not finish. Marcus Hubrich also won the prestigious Grimwade Cup for the best combined result in the Homestyle slalom on Saturday and the Rossignol giant slalom on Sunday. !n the Women's event Patricia Bull of Christiana Ski Club skied well in both runs and maintained a good lead to take first place. She had a total combined time of 1:57.78, ahead of runner up Lisa Powell of Whakapapa with 2:00.42. Beth Turnbull of Manawatu Ski Club was third with a combined time of 2:01.88. Weather conditions at Turoa for the race were excelent and the hard packed snow stood up well during Sunday's racing.
