Maori culture room opened
A long awaited classroom for the purpose of Maori language was blessed and presented to Biddy Mareikura of Maungarongo Marae last week at Ohakune Primary School. Father Bernie Vella addressed the assembled school and offered a short prayer before leading in a hymn. Acting principal, Mrs Moreen Hancock, spoke about the treasures of Maori culture and the feeling of aroha that surrounds the school with its bicultural background. The classroom, previously a resource room, will'serve as the new Maori culture
room. Previously, Mrs Mareikura had to visit each classroom in turn. Mrs Mareikura, accompanied by Vera Wilson on the guitar, sang How Great Thou Art in Maori with the entire school joining in.
