Academy promotes ski racing at Turoa
As in previous years, the Turoa Spenco Race Academy has been very active co-ordinating the 1986 race programme. The ski academy has been active for three years at Turoa, with the aid of Spenco fitness products, which is their major sponsor. Thirty six youngsters aged from eight to seventeen are enrolled with the academy and will be competing in two age groups. The McDonald's cup for Junior racers will be held 2324 August, and the Home-style-Rossignol cup for seniors on 30-31 August. The North Island race venues are Whakapapa, Tukino, Egmontand Turoa. Already, three teams have been chosen based on levels of fitness and race results.
The racers are graded on achievement, and the teams are: Team A - Warren Scott 17, Ohakune, Huntley Wright 16, Ohakune. Team B - Rick Cassels Brown 15, Auckland, Annika Haywood 13, Auckland, Jacyn Bramley 1 5, Ohakune. Team B Reserves - Tina Drayton 16, Ohakune, Geoff Drayton 15, Ohakune. Dean Drayton 14, Ohakune, Bruce Lilburn 13,
Raetihi, Matthew Bramley 1 1, Ohakune. One team will be selected from the three to compete at the nationals to be held at Coronet Peak, 11 to 14 September. The order of the A, B, and B Reserves are subject to change throughout the season if a racer's fitness level or race results improve. This enables progress through the ranks by less experienced skiers whose ability improves over the winter.
