Deer expo will encourage new deer farmers

The Eastern Bay of Plenty Deer Farmers' Association is to hold a major deer promotion called Deer Expo *86. The promotion is to be held in Whakatane at the war memorial centre on Monday and Tuesday 22 and 23 September. The aim of the expo is to demonstrate to farmers interested in diversifying into deer that is is a sound proposition. It will feature over 40 trade exhibitors including major venison and velvet trading companies. There will also be livestock displays and workshops. Workshop topics will include processing and marketing, taxation and invest-

ment. economics. production and management. Farmers contemplating moving into deer will be able to learn about all aspects of deerfarming from the basics of setting up a deer farm through to the exporting prospects of deer products. Speakers confirmed include business entrepreneur Bob Owens, Mike Pattison, general manager of the Game lndustry board, and lan Spiers, president of the NZ Deer Farmers' Association. There is no fee for Deer Expo' 86. Accommodation is being organised. either hotel and motel or billets.
