Ohakune men's breakfast attended by Jim Bolger
Forty-five men attended the Christian Men's Breakfast on 12 July to hear guest speaker Jim Bolger, their represntative in Parliament, speaking as a practising Catholic Christian rather than as a politician. In fact, in questions time, purely political questions were not allowed. He spoke of his life in politics as a Christian with reference to the need of prayer in his own life, the prayer breakfasts held at Parliament, and the praying hands emblem on the wall of his office. From the "Render to Caesar...and to God..." text, he underlined the difficulty any Christian has in reconciling
duty to church and duty to state, and particularly for one in politics. The Homosexual Reform Bill, just passed, came in for some comment at question time, and Mr Bolger was challenged over his selection for his deputy of Mr Gair, who had voted finally for the Bill. The audience was not exclusively male. Two college girls were also present - Mr Bolger's daughter Bernadette and her friend. The presence of Captain Peter Alfrey in this area has occasioned the next breakfast in quick succession after the last. As an evangelist and charismatic, he is expected to inspire and stir those who attend to Christian life and prayer. Fr. Bernard Vella SM
