Happenings at Ruapehu College
Every Wednesday afternoon at Ruapehu College, students and teachers take a break and have some fun for two hours. This fun comes from the different club activities which the students take part in. These include girls' rugby, crafts, girls' soccer, rifle shooting, cooking and kayaking. Most clubs are run by teachers, although senior students take care of a few. Each cycle of club activities lasts six weeks and then the students get a chance to try something new. The college has had pupils
making hofse bridles, creating new sports teams, playing Trivial Pursuits and skiing Mt Ruapehu slopes. Everyone at Ruapehu College lives for Wednesday afternoon.*^ On Thursday 19 June there was an inter-school sports exchange between Ruapehu College and Taumarunui High School. Even though the results were decidedly in favour of the visitors, everyone played well, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the afternoon tea laid on by the catering team. Results were - Netball: A
22-25 win to THS, B 17-35 win to THS. Soccer: 1st XI 0-7 win to THS, 2nd XI 0-1 win to THS. Hockey: 1st XI 1-0 win to Ruapehu. Rugby: 2nd XV 0-44 win to THS. ★ ★ ★ On Tueday 24 June there was another sports visit, this time from Taihape College. All teams competed well, including the girls' soccer team, playing for the first time this year. The results were evenly divided between the two schools. Results were - Netball: A 31-18 win to Taihape, B 3921 win to Taihape, C 24-21

Hockey: 4-0 win to Ruapehu. ★ ★ ★ Recently the college has acquired a new guidance counsellor to take over Mrs Dorothy Meredith's part-time position. His name is Wayne Marsh and he hails from Patea. After four days at the college we interviewed him. These are some of his comments. "My main views about the school are the helpful people in it. I'm most impressed. "The main points about this job are to be able to listen and give people confidence. The thing that made me want to become a guidance counsellor is my interest in helping people on an individual basis. "I get a lot of satisfaction out of assisting people to get jobs, that sort of thing. "My interest include skiing, coaching rugby, playing golf, squash and indoor basketball."
