Ohakune-Karioi defeat Marist; top division 1

Ohakune-Karioi continued their winning way on Saturday with a resounding victory over Marist at Spriggens Park by 26-12. The victory makes Oha-kune-Karioi outright winners of division one after Wanganui HSOB had two points deducted for using a player without a clearance. Ohakune-Karioi notched up 26 points in the first half with the slight wind behind them. Marist managed to get 1 2,back in the second but had no hope of catching Ohakune-Karioi. Lachlan Harding at fullback had another good game, collecting 14 points from two penalties, one try and two conversions. This was a good all-round game from the OhakuneKarioi side which they totallydominated in the first half. As a team effort it was first class. Coach Robbie Manson had to play again this week, this time because Andrew Donald was not permitted to play.

Scorers for OhakuneKarioi were tries by Lachlan Harding, Kellick Harding, Whetu Mareikura, Steve Gordon; Lachlan Harding two conversions, two penalty goals. For Marist: Steve Bennett, PhilipCorney tries, Arlan Taylor, two conversions. At the end of the first round Taihape Pirates and Waiuru were relegated to the second division and Wanganui Pirates and Marton OB come up. With no injuries, strength throughout, and Andrew Donald back OhakuneKarioi look the complete team for the championship round. Ohakune-Karioi senior reserves lost 11-6 to Utiku OB at Taihape. This was a good game considering the awful conditions, and was very close until just before the end. In the last couple of minutes Utiku scored to clinch the match. ForOhakune-Karioi Mike Ryan scored two penalty goals. Raetihi did not play for the second week running when Wanganui HSOB "Red" defaulted. The Raetihi senior reserves however had a good 28-0 win against Huia in wet and cold conditions.
