Wash day the easy way
The Waimarino 's first laundromat, the Snowflake opened for customers in Ohakune yesterday. The shop, in Cedar Mall Ohakune, is equipped with four coin-operated washing machines and four LPGpowered dryers. The idea for the laundromat came from Duncan Brown, a Wellington builder, painter and landscaper. When he was working in Ohakune as a builder at
Turoa Lodge last year he found there was nowhere to do his washing. He also noticed that guests had roomfuls of dirty washing. Since his stay in Ohakune, Duncan has been researching the idea of a laundromat. Although he has not had laundry experience before he says he has built a domestic laundry and he does do his own washing! During the winter, the Snowflake will be operated by Duncan or Richard Jar-
man, also a builder from Wellington. They will also run a same day collection and delivery service for washing and an ironing service will also be available. The collection and delivery service will not run in Summer. Seats and magazines are available for those who wish to wait while their washing washes and dries. Duncan has spent about $30,000 equipping the shop. His American machines
handle about double the wash weight of domestic machines. There is enough space in the shop to double the number of appliances later on if there is a need. Duncan chose a snowflake logo to advertise the laundromat. He believes the motif of the snowflake could be more widelyused in Ohakune. His pick-up and delivery van will display the distinctive logo and he is considering selling snowflake t-shirts.
