New snow groomer to sweep skifield
Snow on turoa Skifield wil be groomed faster and more efficiently this year with the new Kassbohrer 270 machine. The groomer has recently arrived from Germany and was bought brand-new by AHI Turoa for $250,000. The machine is much bigger than the other two groomers used on the moun-
tain. The 270 will groom up to 50 percent more area, and, with its bigger V6 turbo-charged 270 horse powered engine, is much faster. Turoa's mountain manager, Robin Foubister said the 270 can grade slopes of up to 60 degrees. The Kassbohrer's ice tiller, which revolves at a high speed, breaks up ice. The machine can also cover
rocks with snow, which should provide more skiable area, said Mr Foubister. Most grooming is done at night, from about 4am to 8am, and in most weather conditions Mr Foubister said drivers could work in white-outs when they had to almost feel their way around. Five machine operators will be employed to drive the groomers this year.
