Best stag from 'roar'

Gary Deadman from Karioi won the prize for the best stag head in the local club competition for the 1986 "roar". Trevor Fredericksen, president of the Waimarino branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association, said that the 300 pound 1 1pointer stag was shot within two days of Foti Ioannidis' second-place 10-pointer. The winners will not let on exactly where the stags were shot but they were from "around this area". The NZDA want to make the public aware of the association and its work including mountain safety and search and rescue. "We're more than just hunters. We've got competitions at a national level from photography right down to short stories," he said.
