Beautiful gardens promoted

Ohakune Garden Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 59 Miro Street. Keen gardeners gather from within the borough and the surrounding district to share their love of gardening. Two people host the evening each month, organising activities and judging competitions which have been set the month before. At a saies table surplus plants are available at a nominal cost. With saies and the monthly raffle, funds grow and are used to purchase special plants or bulbs for garden club members. This year liliums have been bought. Last year daffodils, tulips and a rose bush were purchased.

Members planted a large number of seeds of the dried flower variety over the last growing season. The results will be put on display at the 75th jubilee of Ohakune Borough next year. The garden club organises two competitions. Internal monthly competitions receive individual prizes and points are awarded. At the end of the year the member with the highest aggregate of points is awarded a cup. This was donated in memory of Mrs Alma Reid, a much respected member of this community and a great lover of gardening. The annual garden club competition is open to all members of the borough.

There are two categories this coming season: new garden, under three years, and established gardens. Judging, by people living outside Ohakune, will be in spring and again in February. Results of April competitions were as follows: Chrysanthemum; 1 E. Beavis, 2 E. Samson, 3 S. Deadman. Autumn Collection; 1 L. McQuarrie, 2 M. George. Flower of choice; 1 E. McLean, 2 S. Deadman, 3 M. George. Shrub of choice; 1 M. George, 2 O. George, 3 A. Crighton. The raffle, a nephrolepsis, was won by F. Tebay. Lucky cup: G. Welsh. Competitions for May are to be chrysanthemum, a flower and shrub of choice. Officers elected for the coming year are President: Ellen Samson, Vice President: Lois McQuarrie, Secretary: Bev Kerr, Committee: all financial members. Subscription: $2.00.
