Hotel signs not wanted

A community mtormation sign may be erected on each of the three state highways leading into Raetihi to inform the motorist of facilities in the town. This was decided at the meeting of the Waimarino County last week. Councillors had been asked for permission to erect signs advertising the Ruapehu Hotel in Raetihi by the proprietors, Ray and Iris Parr. However councillors declined their application on the grounds that if approval was given they would not be justified in declining future requests by other businesses. Town planner, Jane Douglas-Lane from Wanganui, was asked to look into the possibility of erecting information boards.

Rei Hendry, art and craft advisor for the Education Department based at Wanganui, was at Raetihi School last week to help run art activities. Children from standards 2,3 and 4 were sorted into mixed groups for different art activities. These included kite making, clay work, screen printing and string design. Mrs Hendry, who was working on the kites, said she was very pleased with the quality of the children's work. She said the acid test with the kites was to get them into the air to see if they flew. Mrs Hendry said that local children might also be interested in the Make a Banner exhibition organised to help celebrate Warnocks centenary. The exhibition is open to any school child and the school with the most entries will receive a prize of $50. The theme of school over the last 100 years can be interpreted in any way that children can come up with, for instance to do with buildings, classes or transport. Size of banners should be approximately 90cm by 40cm on any material, such as rubbish bag, newspaper or cloth. Entries close on the day of Warnocks community gala, Sunday 18 May. Children can go to Wanganui's memorial hall on that day to enjoy all the fun and actually create their banners there. Materials will be available on the spot. Otherwise they may be sent to Rei Hendry, Department of Education, P.O. Box 4023, Wanganui to arrive before 18 May.
