Patrick shows his style Ohakune-Karioi

win rugby competition

As everyone expected Ohakune-Karioi won the Northern Wanganui domestic competition without too much trouble. They amassed a total of 154 points with 30 against to remain unbeaten for the season. Waiouru were runners-up losing only to Ohakune, collecting 74 points for and 54 against. Raetihi were last with Utiku Old Boys, and have plenty of work to do before the main Wanganui competition starts of 17 May. Saturday's match against Pirates was no walk over for Ohakune. Playing at Taihape, Ohakune were surprised to find their hosts fired up and looking to be the first team to defeat Ohakune. The game started with both teams driving hard in the forwards, and the backs kicking to gain territorial advantage. Ohakune pressed hard and won more ball and finally were rewarded with a penalty which Gerard O'Neill converted to make the half time score 4 — 3. In the second half Ohakune pressed hard several times but with sloppy handling could not finish off. Pirates kicked another penalty after 15 minutes to take the lead. Ohakune won valuable lineout ball after 25 minutes

which was fed to their backs. Ray Brown finished off a good movement with a try which Lachlan Harding converted. He kicked a penalty five minutes later to give Ohakune a 13 — 6 victory. Ray Brown, Noel Akapita and Richard Matthews had good games, as did Steve Cameron before he left the field with concussion.
