Blind foundation fund-raisers confer in local ski lodge
Fund-raisers for the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind met at the Rangitikei Ski Club in Ohakune recently for their conference. They were looking for a quiet place in which they could concentrate on new ideas. They also hoped to develop a team spirit which would be difficult in the hurly-burly of the Auckland head office. The fund-raisers, who
came from all over the country, worked hard and also enjoyed their stay in the vicinity of Tongariro National Park. The foundation gets
government grants for some of its work but for its services, such as the talking book programme and social worker network, it must )■ raise money.
One of the present projects is to replace obsolete equipment on which blind people play their talking books. This will cost a great deal but will be very worthwhile. Plugging into titles held at the Library of Congress in the United States and the Royal Institute for the blind in England will massively increase the prese-nt 3000 titles. The fund-raisers have close contacts in the Waimarino through Ruapehu Lions and Raetihi Rotary.
