Goodbye to the comet
Dear Sir, Let us not be too disappointed in Halley's Comet as we farewell her on her next 76 year trip into outer space and back. Our expectations were high, and the reality fell far short of them — not a very unusual thing in life. Our astronomers knew long ago, and told us not to expect the performance of 1910, mainly because the Comet was four or five times further away this time. My experience of the beauty of nature is that one
happens on it, rather than finding it by seeking. May Halley's Comet remain in our memories as a symbol of reality — unmet expectations and unattained ideals, so true to life. But let us not lessen our expectations or lower our sights accordingly, because we human beings need hope, and high ideals to aim at. Let us remember: there is always, round the corner, a next time.
