REAP course on goat management

REAP is to run an advanced goat management course in the Waimarino on 29 April with two speakers coming from outside the region. Both are leaders in the goat industry. The first is John Woodward who has vast experience in the goat fibre industry. He has six staff under him working full-time in a fibre warehouse. At the course he will cover fibre production, shearing, sorting and classing, as well as examining prospects of different fibres and the market outlook. The second speaker is Colin Horton, a MAF man from Whangarei, who has an intimate knowledge of the goat industry. He will speak on advanced goat management, picking up research findings and applying them to farming. He has knowledge of overseas goat industries and farming systems. MAF researchers have done some interesting trials on goats and have made positive steps in cashmere measurement. They have also had goats slaughtered for test cooking schools in Japan. Research in these areas will also be covered. The course will be held at Ruapehu College on 29 April, 9.30am to 4.30pm. The tutor will be Rob Gollan.
