Irirangi gift to Waiouru skating

Funds for Waiouru 's Roller Skating Rink which was opened on 23 February have been boosted with a contribution from HMNZS Irirangi. Supply officer of Irirangi, Lieutenant S. Hill, handed over a cheque for $2500 to the Army Training Group Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel R. J. Martin recently. Lt Col Martin said that although the concrete slab for the rink had now been paid for, the money would be well spent in providing a public address system for the rink. Irirangi has consistently supported the skating rink project, both at committee level and in fund-raising activities. Since the Navy comprises nearly seven per cent of the Waiouru community, Irirangi has received the grant from the RNZN central welfare fund as a proportional contribution similar to the grant provided from the Army's welfare fund. The skating rink provides a new activity for Waiouru's school children and teenagers as well as being a sporting venue for central districts skating teams.
