Excursion train chance to see railway engineering works

How about a train journey in vintage carriages over some of our most spectacular scenery? If you feel like sampling something of the romance of rail you have an unusual chance soon when the Railway Enthusiasts Society (Inc) is organising a local rail excursion. You will have the chance of travelling around the Raurimu Spiral, over the Hapuawhenua and Makatote Viaducts and along the realigned track in the Horopito area. On Saturday 26 April a train will depart Ohakune at 9am and arrive at Raurimu at 10.20am, having threaded through the spiral. The schedule allows for slow running of the train over interesting parts of the track. At Raurimu the diesel engines will run around the

train ready for the return journey and there should be time for passengers to stretch their legs. Departure time from Raurimu will be 10.30am to arrive at Ohakune at 11.50am. The excursion is a local bonus on a larger venture when over 300 Auckland train enthusiasts visit the

Waiouru Army Museum and the Ruapehu area on 25 and 26 April. The visitors will stay overnight in Ohakune. Tickets for the local excursion are strictly limited and can be bought from the Ruapehu Information Office, Clyde Street, Ohakune, price $10 each.
