AMALGAMATION
Dear Sir, The decision of the Ohakune Borough Council to withdraw from the Waimarino district council brought a sharp reaction from the electors of Ohakune and an opinion poll was soon underway. The result of the poll showed overwhelming support for Ohakune to amalgamate with Waimarino County and Raetihi Borough. These signatures have been sent to the Local Government Commission chairman Mr Brian Elwood in support of the amalgamation. However a last ditch effort to reach agreement on Tuesday night 22 March resulted in Ohakune reversing its decision and joining with the other two councils with certain reservations. How pleased I am with this decision and only hope that their reservations can be resolved with not too much difficulty. I would like to thank all those electors who supported the petition and our Mayor Mr Bill Taylor who congratulated me after the meeting on the direction electors had given him on this issue.
S. D. (Wig) Whale Petitioner, Ohakune
