Wheelchair, pram track opening

A track through 800 metres of Tongariro National Park which is wide enough for prams and wheelchairs is to be officially opened next Saturday 12 April. The walk, named the Rimu Track, is opposite the Ohakune Ranger Station and is only the second track of its type in the park. The initial finance for the track came from the Four Friends Trust in Wanganui, a group of people who provide finance for va rious construction around the park. A two-to-one subsidy was then given by the Government. Voluntary labour in building the track was supplied by the Wanganui Tramping Club, Ruapehu Lions Club, Navy personnel from Auckland and park staff. The chairman of the Four Friends Trust, Mr Arthur Bates, will officiate at the opening. Local dignatories and members from the Tonga - riro/Taupo National Parks and Reserves Board are also expected to attend the opening.
