Public asked for views on park plan
•Continued from front page "The levy would incorporate all direct costs of operations provided in the park, including costs for services provided from its district and head offices . . . The levy would be expected to cover actual costs, capital depreciation and a 10 per cent return on investment." Statements on Whakapapa Village make the point that while the settlement has a key function as a visitor service centre, any new developments will have to be in harmony with national park values. There is concern about the number of wild animals, especially deer, in the park. At present recreational hunting is allowed to exterminate deer, however, in parts infestation is still very high. The reviewed plan suggests helicopter recovery of live deer might be allowed in areas not used by recreational hunters or where recreational hunting is not effective in controlling numbers. The policy of not permitting aircraft, both fixedwing and helicopters, within the park except for search and rescue and for authorised work, is discussed. The -statement comments that there is a divergence of opinion on this issue and suggests that the whole question should be debated more fully. Closing date for submissions and comments is 20 June 1986. They may be handed in at park headquarters at Whakapapa or sent direct to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Department of Lands and Survey, PO Box 5014, Wellington.
