Park interpreter starts work at Tongariro
A new park interpreter and editor of 'Tongariro', the quarterly journal of the Tongariro National Park, has started work at park headquarters in Whakapapa Village. Chris Rudge has taken over the position from
Annabelle White, who recently left for the South Island. Chris has come from Nelson, where he was most recently working for Air AlbatrosS. He is not new to the park as he worked at Ohakune Ranger Station for 14 months some years
ago as pre-requisite for his Diploma in Parks and Recreation. He was a park assistant at the station, when the late Bill Cooper was senior ranger. As part of practical work for the diploma, Chris worked in a number of areas. He spent several months at the gannet sanctuary of Cape Kidnappers, as a back country ranger in Yosemite National Park, California, and in New Zealand national parks of Fiordland and Urewera. He has also spent some time in Alaska looking at parks. After finishing his diploma, which included several years study at Lincoln College, Chris spent the next two summers with the Lands and Survey's Visual Production Unit as their photographer. As park interpreter at Tongariro National Park, Chris will be responsible for writing and editing the journal and will provide information for the winter and summer newspapers. He will also research and write for displays in the visitor centre, arrange walks and talks and will do a weather analysis each day. Chris is living in National Park township. In his spare time he hopes to try gliding with the Ruapehu Gliding Club in Raetihi. He enjoys flying and has his private pilot's licence. He is hoping to go for his commercial pilot's licence. He also enjoys tramping, skiing, climbing and photography so he doubts he will get bored on his days off!
