Action in the Ruapehu/Taihape Inter-College cricket match

Ruapehu College held its first summer interschool sports exchange of the year against Taihape last Wedneday. Three softball teams, two tennis teams and three cricket teams took part. The 1st eleven cricket was hopeful of a good performance, after recent competi- S tion experience. However after again losing the toss and fielding, Ruapehu had to work hard to contain the aggressive Taihape batting. Taihape's openers made 44 before P. Thomas was

bowled for 32. At 90/4 Taihape looked to be heading for a large score but excellent bowling by Damien Brider (7 overs, 5 maidens 4/9) saw Taihape 119/8 after their 25 overs. Ruapehu again failed batting under pressure with Huntley Wright 's 18 runs being the highlight. Damien Brider completed an all-round performance with second top score of 10. Ruapehu were all out for 54. Mention must also be made of Johnny Rogers excellent keeping, allowing only two byes. lst XI Taihape 119/8: P. Thomas 32; A. Transom 19; D. McDonnell, 7 overs

The unbeaten junior side travelled to Taihape hopeful of a good result. Taihape batted first but were always struggling after Allen Prince claimed a wicket with the first ball of „ the match. However it was a team effort which saw Taihape score only 73/9 after 25 overs. Ruapehu batted positively in their innings and easily went on to make 77 /4

in 16 overs. The highlight of the innings was Craig O'Sullivan unbeaten 33, with Phillip Kerr contributing 1 1 runs. Junior XI Taihape 73/9: N. Adlington 21; R. George 19; A. Prince, 5 overs, 2/12; D. Sattler, 5 overs, 3/20; C. O'Sullivan, 5 overs 1/9; N. Donghi, 5 overs, 2/13. Ruapehu 77/4: C. O'Sullivan, 33 not out; P. Kerr 11; J. Transom, 3 overs, 2/10. The girls XI also travelled to Taihape but found the competition to be very strong. Taihape scored 118/4 with Vanessa Meyer bowling well. Ruapehu in reply were all out for 28. Greta Betty top-scored.
