Local man dies in 'copter crash
A member of a wellknown Karioi family died on Friday when the helicopter he was piloting crashed in rugged Urewera county south of Ruatahuna. He was Bernard McDonnell, 28, who had been employed by a deer recovery firm, Helitrack Ltd of Opitiki, for the past 14 months. Mr McDonnell and his passenger from Waiotahi were both killed during a deer recovery operation. The wreckage was not found until Saturday morning when a grid search by five private helicopters located the crash site.
