Ohakune hoteliers in the USA
Proprietors of the Ohakune Hotel, Bruce and Mary Leggatt and three of their children, have recently returned from a three-week trip to America and Hawaii. They flew first to Los Angeles where they met up with their eldest daughter, Betty, who had flown from England. The family toured the sights of Los Angeles, including two days at Disneyland and a day at Knotts Berry Farm, a western-style amusement park. They also went to Universal Studios where Brian and
David enjoyed a conversation with Kit, Knight Rider's incredible car, and saw a performance of the A Team. The Leggatts then flew to Las Vegas where Bruce enjoyed the junkie slot machines! They hired a small plane and pilot and flew over the Grand Canyon which Bruce described as "incredible." Back in Las Vegas they saw the show 'Playboy girls of the 80s' which was "quite hard case," according to Bruce. One of the highlights of the trips for Bruce was a whale-watching trip on a commercial launch.
"At that time of year whales migrate along the San Diego coast and we got within 20 or 30 metres of them," said Bruce. On a day-trip to Mexico, the Leggatts "dabbled a little" in the very cheap gold and silver. They spent eight days soaking up the sun in Hono'ulu and hired a car to get to more remote parts. They visited Pearl Harbour and saw the USS Arizona which sank in Second World War bombing, entombing 1 1 23 men whose remains are still there. Their hotel was right on Waikiki Beach where Brian and David spent their days
sunbathing, swimming anc snorkelling. Bruce said they were glad they did not organise their activities before they left New Zealand and could do what they wanted on most « days. Most of their trip was captured on video tape. Although they thoroughly enjoyed the trip, Bruce said they were very glad to be back. "There's no place like home," he said. While they were away, the hotel was well looked after by Ian Hays, Margaret Hamilton-Low and the Leggatt's second daughter, Jillian, from Turangi.
