Search and rescue training
Tongariro National Park will be used as the training area for the Waimarino Search and Rescue team this weekend. The operation is being held to familiarise the team with search and rescue (S AR) procedure and equipment. The aim of the search will be to look for John Brough, the Raetihi boy who went missing on Mt Ruapehu late last year. The names of those willing to take part in the exer-
cise were gathered from the first meeting of the Waimarino SAR which was held last Monday 10 March. The 45 people at the meeting heard talks on SAR organisation by Taihape Police Sergeant Brett Jones, and on the roles of search advisor and search controller, by senior ranger at the Ohakune Ranger Station, Lisle Irwin. Ohakune Police Sergeant Neil Coker spoke on the SAR exercise. A training session in the use of radios was also given.
Four contact officers were appointed to be responsible for contacting other members of the group when a search is called and to help with the general organisation of meetings. The Waimarino SAR will meet approximately every three months. Although the main input in this weekend's search will come from the Waimarino SAR group, there will also be a small number of people from Taihape, Taumarunui and Wanganui taking part.
