College Whanau leaders chosen
The newly introduced Whanau system at Ruapehu College is proving to be a great success. Senior students are taking a responsible role and younger pupils are mixing with their seniors. The eight Whanau leaders, two for each Whanau, replace the prefect system of previous years. These leaders form the senior part of the school council, which is responsible for cultural and sporting activities, some routine administration and fundraising. The Whanau groups are divided into four Hapu groups which include students of all ages, and which replace the previous form class system. Hapu meet daily for roll check and other college administration, and to look after students' welfare. Acting-principal at the school, Ian Meredith, is confident the system will be superior to the previous form groups. "The senior students are becoming more aware of the junior students and have a greater opportunity for leadership and decision making, while the juniors are feeling they are more a part of the school," he said. "Some students who normally wouldn't have organised anything have been forced to participate and use their seniority and have surprised themselves to the benefit of all," said Mr Meredith.
