New kindy playgroup for young children

Ohakune Kindergartens waiting list is booming and, with so many parents recognising the importance of play to their young children, a play group is to start at the kindergarten. This will be held every Wednesday at the Ohakune Kindergarten commencing 19th March 1986. Parents will pay 50e per child and be responsible for the supervision of their child during the session. Children will be encouraged at a younger age to play constructively with' equipment and return it to proper places as well as mixing socially. Wednesday afternoons are the time when the kindergarten teachers are involved in adffiinistration planning and preparation work so they will not be available for supervision. However pamphlets arid literature on the reasons for offering particular activities and the ways children learn from playing are available for play group parents. In this way, not only will the children benefit from the opportunity but also the parents may widen their understanding about why play is so important to their children. They may see examples of activities they can easily provide at horne to satisfy the children's need to explore and learn as they grow. Vera Donnelly Head Teacher
