Ohakune's postmaster, Sam Swarbrick, got more than he bargained for last week when his staff helped him celebrate his 50th birthday. A large parcel of presents, labelled the 'necessities of life', provided Sam with all he needed for the next 50 years — including a gin bubble bath and something to

check the grey in his hair. Exchange operator, Norma Cranston, in top hat and red garters, left Sam gasping "this is not being published is it?" With her help, Sam managed to cut a beautiful birthday cake, which proved to be inedible — it was all polystyrene under the icing!
