Counting heads starts this week

From this Saturday 22 February, every house in the Waimarino will be called on by one of nine census enumerators, giving out the 1986 census forms. The enumerators, who have been trained by area supervisor, Judy Doyle, each have their own area in which they must personally •give census forms to every householder. Every person living or staying in each house as at midnight on 4 March has to. fill out a form from that house. The census is completely confidential. Before the

forms leave the Waimarino, the names will be removed, and there is no way that government departments such as Inland Revenue and Social Welfare can see them. Any person refusing to fill out a form will have to pay a heavy fine. As information gathered in the census will be used to help make government policy and to find out the needs of each area, it is important to fill out firms honestly and correctly. Enumerators will cover the area from just north of Pokaka to the north, Raukawa Falls on Parapara Road to the south, the Wanganui River to the west, where park assistant Fiona Lundy will be counting the number of canoeists on the river, and to near Waiouru in the east.
