Waimarino's 75th jubilee show
Although fewer people than usual attended Saturday's 75th Jubilee Waimarino A and P Show at Raetihi it was still a great day. Tom Punch, president of the Waimarino A and P Association said the organisation went very smoothly. "The displays and the support of business people from the district must be commended, and the horse events were quite good considering competition from other areas," he said. Mr Punch said that last year horse event entries were a record and you "can't expect to go up every year." Visitors enjoyed a fine display from the Turoa Tumblers gymnastic team, a parade of old and new Ford cars, a display of
Army equipment, a display of boomerang th'rowing from Tony Rockhouseof North Auckland, a hangi, a selection of sideshows and business stalls as well as horse events, stock judging, pets, and handcraft and home produce judging. Vegetable judge Philip Scarrow said that entries were well down as was the quality and seemed to be through lack of interest. "People come along and say they have better at home — why don't they put it in?" he said. Competition from a swimming carnival and squash tournament in Raetihi as well as horse events in the lower North Island and other attractions discouraged attendance, according to Mr Punch.
