Country schools' round-up
We follow up last week's outline of changes in several Waimarino Schools with an update on some country schools in our region, to be continued next week. Pipiriki Thejuniorsection of Pipiriki School has been given official approval to go bilingual, said principal of the school, Jo Mikaere. Because of this, a language assistant is to be appointed to work part-time at the school and this will be a local resident. The roll of 14 pupils is two more than at the end of last year. There were two enrolments at the beginning of the year, both senior pupils, one from Raetihi and the other from the South Island. One new entrant will be starting in May. Teachers college Maori studies students will be visiting Pipiriki School in late February to help teach pupils, and they will be given an official Maori welcome by the school. Orautoha The roll at Orautoha School is up by three this term to 24 pupils. Mrs Robin Olds from Orautoha is a new teacher at the school and is working part-time.
Pupils will be attending the YMCA camp at Kakatahi in mid-April, and will be holding a cross country day at the school towards the end of term. Six pupils have enrolled at the school, including some from Wanganui and Kaitieke, said principal, Derek Jensen. There are two new entrants at the school this year. t i National Park National Park School has three relieving teachers for the first three weeks of term until principal, David Mac- 1 rae, returns from a holiday overseas and another permanent teacher is appointed. Deputy principal, Lorna Kramer, is acting principal in the meantime. A teacher at the school, Alex Holes, said the roll at the school is about the same 1 as last year with approxi- ; mately 100 pupils. A children and parent's 1 sports and barbecue afternoon is planned in the next two to three weeks and the school will be taking part in the country school's swimming sports in Taumarunui in mid-March. Kaitieke The children of Kaitieke School, south-west of Owhango, are currently working towards their
Aquapass swimming certificates, said their principal, Neil Watson. The school now has a new photocopying machine and their library has re-opened after renovation work. A number of new books have been purchased. The roll at the twoteacher school has dropped slightly to 38 with one new entrant and two new pupils coming to the school at the beginning of the term. The form one and two pupils have started manual training at Turaki Primary in Taumarunui one afternoon a week where they will learn sewing, cooking and woodwork. Rangataua Softball, cricket and tabloid sports are planned for the inter-schools' rural sports day which is being put on by Rangataua School in mid-March. The school will be accompanying Orautoha and Ngamatea schools to the YMCA camp at Kakatahi in April and will be participating in the rural schools sports day in Waiouru which is to be held soon. There is a roll of 32 children at the school which is similar to last year, said the principal Peter Miller. He
and Ruth Alpass are the two teachers at the school. Owhango A softball tournament is to be held at Owhango School during mid-March with other local rural schools attending. Pupils at the school are working towards their Aquapass certificates at the Taumarunui town pool and the school pool. There are 55 pupils at the school this year, with two new entrants arriving at the beginning of the term. The school has three teachers, including principal, Gary West.
