Progress on plan for Rangataua sewerage
The Rangataua sewerage scheme has been discussed again recently. Last Tuesday a meeting was held in Rangataua with Health Department and Ministry of Works and Development officers, a local representative of the Rangataua Ratepayers' Association and county councillors Gavin Jones and John Martin. According to Cr Jones the meeting attempted to "consolidate foward planning to enable us to get our act together before the cut-off date for subsidies of 31 March." If the county is going to benefit from the 40 per cent subsidy it must have its case filed with the Health Department by 3 1 March as
the subsidy will be phased out after that. The meeting did produce agreement that the settling pond system was most suitable, as the alternative permeating mat system, which used septic tanks, would force residents whose houses did not have such tanks to instal them. There is still a lot of work to be done including town planning changes to allow an increase in subdivision which will reduce the cost of the system, and these changes must be gazetted and advertised for objections. Cr Jones said that the Health Department and the Ministry of Works and Development could not have been more helpful. A meeting with ratepayers is planned soon.
